Archive for the “Guild” Category

I often find myself saying that Covenant is a casual raiding guild with delusions of being hardcore. This is not actually true. After pondering our existence for some time the best that I can come up with is the oft-used oxymoron “casually hardcore”.

Most folks who take the time to think about it consider a person’s, and by extension guild’s, playtime in WoW to exist on a continuum. At one end you have the ultra casual. These folks play the game at their leisure. They probably don’t raid and love to play alts. Their ultimate goal is relaxed fun at their own pace. At the other end you have high structured, completive, goal driven guilds. These players dedicate themselves to the game above all else and strive for world first progression kills. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle.

On a scale from one to ten, with one being playing hide and seek in Silvermoon and ten being guilds like Ensidia and Premonition, I’d say we are a seven. This is a precarious place to be. Because of lax recruiting rules, guild mergers, and other things we have three levels of players in the guild. We also have three ten man groups A, B, and C.

Note: The levels of player are not always indicative of which ten man group they are on as these groups formed organically.

The players in the first level are more of 8 to 9 on the scale. They are goal driven students of the game. They push themselves to complete the top level of 10-man content and min-max their toons. They are the mentors and leaders of the guild. These players are driven by gear, achievements, server progression, and bragging rights. They are Type A personality people.

The players in the second level are more of a 6-8 on the scale. They have many of the same goals as players in the first group but have been held back for various reasons. Time, real-life issues, issues in previous guilds have all put these players slightly behind the bleeding edge. They are also very goal driven and given the proper resources will join the first level of the hardcore in time.

The players in the third level are more in the 4-6 range. They aren’t min-maxers and generally have a lower level of play. This is either due to a lack of knowledge or a desire to play the game on a more casual level. This way of play is not bad, but it does not lend itself to successful raiding. Players at the third level who seek out knowledge to improve there play either on their own or through a mentor quickly move into level 2. These players also tend to be very loyal.

The one constant through all three levels in Covenant seems to be a desire to shift further towards the hardcore end of the spectrum. With the institution of DKP and recent forming of a third 10 man group this seems to be working well.

However a lack of a solid recruiting and application process as well as not having a system of negative incentives is hold us back from the top levels of play. These also seem to be a ways off so that could stunt growth in progression. However in the meantime the focus on balancing the needs and wants of all three kinds of players is more important to the heath and viability of the guild.

As players move up the levels and progress in their own toons the guild will progress better in content and we can make the call as to whether or not we want to ratchet up the intensity. We can’t become a hardcore progression guild overnight, but the path is visible. We just need to survive the process. As the GM is it my job to see that we do.

Today marks the end of the first Raid Week as Covenant. The guild and website are up and running and I’ve even had time to still do my dailies and raid. The week was a little hectic with all the new folks and organization shuffle but this next week looks to be better.

Tonight we are starting two 10 man Ulduar groups and have 25 man Ulduar as well as 25 man Naxx farm scheduled. We don’t quite have the full 25 man roster yet but we are very close.

Last night we took the new folks and some pugs and absolutely pwned 3 wings in Naxx. If we had gotten started an hour earlier we could have cleared the whole thing. Some folks got geared and 3 hours work for easy, good loot is fine by me.

Now that all of the administrative work is done setting up the guild and the website I can focus on schedules and raid strat. I think we can make a run for some 10 man server firsts and I’d like to get the 25 man doing more than two bosses. We’ll see how this week goes. Stay tuned.

Hi all! Sorry I have been afk for the past few days, I have been working on a new project that I am ready to announce.

My time raiding with NO DRAMA is over. Most all of the raiders have come with me and I have started a new guild, Covenant.

Covenant aims to be a 25 man progression guild. I have spent almost all of my free time the past week getting the guild ready and we are off to a great start.

Check out the new guild site at http://theunderminecovenant.com.

We are recruiting and if you are looking for a serious raiding guild we may be the answer.

Stay tuned. There will be much more to come.

The summer 2009 NO DRAMA recruitment drive is going better than expected. We have gotten many new applicants as well as renewed intrest with the veteren players. We are well on our way to being able to staff a full 25 man raid with alternates. This makes me very excited.

We had our ususal raiding lull over the weekend and I was not able to log very much and with Father’s Day the usual Sunday run was put on hold. This worked out well as it gave me time to knock out the Fire Fest so I can get back to finishing my Shaman… he’s almost ready…

Tonight we are going for round two of Ulduar 25. We have new toons to take, and thankfully more healers. I am looking for good things to come and would like to see us at least down Kologarn and Auriaya. Wish us luck.

I also get to tryout raiding with my new Logitch G9X mouse and a new addon config. This should be an interesting if not productive night. Stay tuned. More to come…

wolgraph

I like math. That is one of the reasons I like WoW so much. Raid analysis and theorycrafting are my favorite parts of the game.

I have used WoWWebStats for a long time for all of my raid analysis and it has worked very well for me until today. Thanks to Kadomi over at Tank Like a Girl I have found something better.

World of Logs does everything that WWS does and much more. Most notably there is more and better information. The graphs are fantastic. You can do things like display DPS over time and it will shade the time Bloodlust is up. It will show death and Rebirth events as lines on the graph. There is even a default graph to compare total Incoming Damage per Second with total Heals per Second.

Disc priests should rejoice over this new site as well. For the first time it accurately reports damage mitigated through PW:S and Divine Aegis as a heal category. Recount and WWS can not do this. This will give a much better representation of the Disc Priest performance vs. other healers. For the healing lead this is awesome.

But wait it gets even better….

ZOMG REAL TIME REPORTING!

That’s right folks when you run the java client in the background you can capture data real time during the raid for on the fly analysis during wipes. If Recount would do my dishes, ironing, and laundry for me it still would not be as good as this.

Previously uploaded logs are stored by guild in an easy to use Calendar interface and you can even show raid history by guild member.

My only complaint so far is that it is hard to use behind a proxy, so it looks like I won’t be wasting hours at work uploading new data. But I’m sure they’ll fix this soon.

I plan on running the real time analysis tonight during our Ulduar 10 raid and see how it works. I am very excited.

Give it a shot and leave a comment as to your experiences. I’ll update with more of mine later.

It is a fact of life that some days are better than others. This is just the way the universe works.

Tuesday and Wednesday could not have been more different. Yet when they are viewed together, it gives great insight into the highs and lows of raiding.

For the past couple weeks NO DRAMA has been a little rocky. Tension and apathy were high and attendance was low. Even the core the raiders we feeling the stress as the officers tried to figure out how to keep progression going while getting everyone else raiding as well. After a week of unsuccessful attempts to create multiple 10 man raid groups I made an executive decision.

I sent out invites to about 40 level 80 toons for a two night Naxx 25 farm run. It was to be a rollstravaganza. Loot Council would be suspended for the run, all main spec gear was open roll, the only limit would be your own greed. The goal in this run was to spark guild wide interest and participation.

Tuesday at 9PM server time 19 toons showed up and we invited one FoND (Friend of NO DRAMA) to make 20. We had enough for an aptly named Heroic: The Dedicated Few run. Time to see if Naxx really is that easy.

We started, as always on Anub’Rehkan. It went fairly well and the loot went quickly. We cleared trash up to GWF. And decided to try and use Widow’s Embrace for the first time (we always just heal through the enrage) since we lost one and only had 19. It was quickly figured out that killing an add near her does not break the enrage in Heroic. We had a priest switch to Shadow and Mind Control the adds. This worked well.

After GWF we moved to clear trash and things went terribly wrong. Due to maintenance Blizzards network and the terrible luck that Undermine has, the server froze and was offline for an extended time. This killed any chance at getting the next 4 bosses we had scheduled down as well as the 10 man Ulduar we had planned to follow. In the end it was productive but an overall disappointing night.

After the let down from the night before I was not looking forward to the runs very much on Wednesday. 9 PM rolled around again and 20 toons, mostly the same, showed up again. We picked up where we left off and headed to Maexxna. We one-shotted her, easily. We proceeded to clear the entire Plague wing with no wipes and very few deaths. No one even died in the Gauntlet before Loetheb. Not even the Rogue on follow.

We were good. Very good. After 4 bosses we called it for the night. I logged off my tree and hopped on Kora to head to 10 man Ulduar.

The win kept on coming.

We downed Flame Leviathan with Tower of Storms up, and headed straight to XT to try for Heartbreaker. We got the heart to 1% and then we wiped ourselves to try again. Army of Dead was going to be down for 20 minutes so we went back and one shotted Razorscale and Ignis. We even got A Quick Shave on Razorscale.  More win.

At this point Armys were back off cooldown and we headed back to XT. This time we made it. We killed the heart at 75% and went into hard-mode. We were pulling it off until I got stuck by a Gravity Bomb void-zone and a Life Spark and died.  We wiped a while later. But it was very doable. At this point it wsa nearing 2AM and we all had to work in the morning so we called it.

We’ll pick up where we left off tonight or Sunday and get our second Ulduar Hard-Mode done. I am very excited. It was a great run and even better after the fail night before. Again, another reason why I raid. I love being reminded.

Running a guild is a logistically difficult thing to do. As Hibbleton said, it should come with a paycheck.

The great Stan Lee taught us all that “With great power comes great responsibility.” As a Senior Officer or Guild Leader you are directly responsible for other people’s fun. This is an incredible amount of power to have over people who you have never actually “met”. Being a raid leader compounds this even further.

To quote another famous man: “You can not be all things to all people.” This is also very true.

So with all this power and limited choice who do you save: the people in the bus dangling on the cliff or the folks swimming next to the capsized ferry? It’s a choice that no one wants to make. It is also the same choice that makes someone a leader.

NO DRAMA is at a crossroads. We were founded as a group of like-minded players who liked playing together. We became friends. Even as wannabe punk rocker in my youth I never had friends with names like Boagrious, Chorizo, Callinan, Soop, Tirill, and many others… That doesn’t even count Sephiroth, who I spent the entire summer after sophmore year trying to kill in FFVII.

The best part is I keep meeting more awesome folks. These humans are the reason I love NO DRAMA. Not the toons.

I guess in essence we were founded as a “social guild”. Then we tried to become a “progression raiding guild”. I am as guilty, if not more so, than anyone of this.

It was bound to happen. We are good. We are really good. The funny thing is, with a couple of exceptions, most of the members were not hardcore raiders in BC or Vanilla WoW. Some of us forget that. I forget that.

Naxxramas was very conducive to being a social guild who raids. Plus, there was just about 10 of us. So it worked out well.  Because of the way that Blizzard handles progression now. After we bested the 10 man version we wanted 25 man content. So we pugged alot and we grew. Because people liked us. To be honest we are very likable. Plus we have girls.

Soon we had enough for our own 25 man runs. Here is where issues crept in. 10 man logistics can be a little difficult but all in all it is fairly easy to organize 10 people. 25 people are hard to organize, especially when you don’t know them all as well as you’d like.

Loot drama is also bound to happen. 25 people + 4 items = 21 people (maybe more) with no items. People like shiny items. A loot council was setup to fix this. This is good and bad. But the mantle of leadership grew heavier.

The next step from the 25-man Naxx content is into 10-man Ulduar. This transition has not been as smooth. How do we raid a reasonable amount of time and get both Naxx 25 done as well as 2 10-man Ulduar groups. We need to prioritize.

The priority should be the people. To do that and still raid it feels like 2 10-man groups with alternates is the way to go. It starts to feel like managing a sports team at this point. However we need to act more like friends in a pickup league, not the NBA. We are not Ensida or Vodka. That is ok.

We need to find a balance between raiding and friendship. I don’t think you have to sacrifice one for the other.

In the end it is easy to forget that the toon is really a human. Especially when managing the toons in a team.  Communication is key. When you treat people like people and actually talk to them everyone wins.

The caveat is that these humans want to raid. We think it’s fun. So we can’t forget that either.

We need to  make NO DRAMA something people want to be a part of, and not just to raid. That is the real challenge, not raid schedules. Although those need to be made as well.

It is a beautiful, albeit delicate, balance and the leadership is the tipping point.

After defeating Flame Leviathan for the past 3 weeks, we downed him on the first level of his four hard modes last night and earned the Orbital Bombarment achievement as well as two Emblems of Conquest instead of the normal Emblem of Valor.

I was sure we had the fight down cold. To prevent it from becoming a lolfest I suggested that we leave up Thorim’s Tower (of Storms) up. We did and wiped once. We ran back, did it again and got it down. Ironsoul’s brother Firesoul dropped as well as Might of the Leviathan. We will continue to leave up one tower next week and and soon as we are comfortable with that I’d like to work on two.

Here is an how the towers work:

To start the event including hard mode options the Raid Leader needs to speak with Lore Keeper of Norgannon before Brann. This allows you to keep the towers up and active. Each tower adds something to the encounter.

Tower of Storms (Purple): Thorim’s Hammer. Deals Stormstrike damage to all enemies nearby. Additional damage is taken if directly under the impact location.   Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and does 25% more Physical damage.

Tower of Flames (Red): Mimiron’s Inferno. Deals 150000 Fire damage to all nearby enemies and leaves a flaming blaze behind.  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and does 50% more Fire damage.

Tower of Frost (Blue): Hodir’s Fury. Deals 150000 Frost damage to all nearby enemies, entombing them in ice.  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and slows vehicle movement by 20%. Ice tomb lasts for one minute unless broken or melted by flames.

Tower of Life: (Green): Freya’s Ward. Deals 13500 to 16500 Natures damage to all nearby enemies and summons guardians of nature to surround the enemy.  Flame Leviathan gains 25% more HP and decreases his fire damage taken by 10%.

Loot Changes:

No Towers: 2 Pieces of Regular Loot and one Emblem of Valor

1 Tower: 2 Pieces of Regular Loot and two Emblems of Conquest

2 Towers: Same as 1 Tower plus a Runed Orb

3 Towers: Same as Two Towers plus an additional Emblem of Conquest

4 Towers: Same as Three Towers plus an additional Emblem of Conquest as well as a Hard Mode item

It is nice to see Blizzard taking this approach in design. Flame Leviathan can either be a loot pinata or a very big challenge and rewards you accordingly. I am looking for ward to more of this in other Hard Modes. It should help keep the content fresh.

OK Frost, here ya go…

Last night was many things. Most important was the Guild First kill on Kel’Thuzad and our first guild Heroic Naxxramas clear. Congratulations Everyone! The loot was a DPS-fest (with a side of tank love) with Betrayer of Humanity, Journey’s End, and Last Laugh as well as a couple of Tier 7.5 Helms. As a holy paladin is was kind of sad not to see any of the the plethera of near best-in-slot healer drops, but there is always next this week.

Reaching this level of being able to organize a full clear of a 25 man raid, even at the lowest tier of current content is a very nice accomplishment. KT took us only a couple pulls with the only real problem being bad luck during the phase three adds. The only thing standing in our way of farming the whole instance is timing, scheduling, speed. We have proven we can do it, now we need to do it faster.

Speaking of speed, next on last night’s agenda was Malygos. We did not down him, but we were killed by enrage every time. This is a good sign, but it means that we lost the DPS race. This is fixable. We brought some freshly dinged under-geared toons with us and unfortunately I think that’s not going to be doable. We need to bring our best DPS to burn phase one and two faster. On phase three we need less healing and more of the DPS to make the follow happen after the drop and then spam their macro. I really wanted this last night, but I’ll settle for tonight. I think we can do this.

I’d like to get back into Ulduar this week as well, but for now I am quite happy with the 25 man progress.

On a sad note, we also lost a core member and guild commander last night. Learn was a casualty of raid schedules and our general lack of organization as we try to figure out how to get these 25-mans together. He is a great friend, player, and leader. He will be dearly missed.
